Senior Saturdays
May 26, 2018

Jaffrey Silver Ranch Airport
KAFN
Jaffewy, NH

In the interest of “giving back” to our Seniors, neighbors, and friends, we will be hosting a “Senior Saturday” at Jaffrey Airfield Silver Ranch (AFN) every Saturday, from 2: to 4: pm, beginning May 26, 2018 and throughout the summer and fall, except FIREWORKS weekend in August. (See enclosed attachment.)
This will be an informal, OUTDOORS, get-together to encourage folks, of all ages, to get outside, to socialize, and to see and enjoy what goes on here at the Airfield. We’ll provide lawn chairs and light refreshments.
EVERYONE is invited to drop by – including: SENIORS, veterans, “rusty pilots”, “airport bums”, “handicapped”, “wheelchair drivers” and those who may never have been out to the airfield before !
We encourage pilots to stop by too, to visit and/or offer to show interested visitors around their own favorite aircraft.
We’d appreciate your helping to spread the word. Would you like us to list NHPA in the appropriate space at the bottom of our poster? You can be a “Co-Sponsor” or “In Cooperation With” (No Charge).
A huge side benefit, we hope, will be to create some new “friends” of aviation.
All the best to you,
Lee and Harvey Sawyer

2017 Pilots and Drivers
September 22, 2017

Porstmouth Pease
KPSM
Portsmouth, NH

Good morning,

The Events Committee is hard at work planning two great events for 2017, the annual Pilots & Drivers Charity Golf Tournament and the Aviation Day and Runway 5K. We have had tremendous success the past two years with these events, contributing thousands of dollars toward furthering STEM goals. As you may be aware, this year, proceeds from these events will be split up into 75% for STEM advancement in the state (ACE camps and similar initiatives) and 25% to go to the NH Special Aeronautical Fund. This fund was established by GSAMA to benefit NH's non-SPIAS airports and has relied on donations up to this point. We're hoping these events are going to take this fund, and GSAMA's passion for aviation, to the next level this year, but we need your help.

For the Pilots & Drivers events the past two years, we have had trouble getting the minimum 60 golfers. The golf courses require a minimum number of players, so we are paying for 60 golfers whether or not we get 60 golfers. When we get less than 60, funds that were provided as sponsorships are inevitably used to pay for the remaining golfers which eats into our profits. This means less money for ACE camps and less money for NH airports.

This year, we really need every airport in the state to pitch in. You don't necessarily have to spend any money, but we need you to spread the word about this event and help us get to the 60 golfers. Also, even if you don't play golf, you should plan on joining us for at least a portion of the day. You can come just for the lunch at the end, there's an option to just buy lunch, or even if you aren't buying lunch, just show up and support the event. Ask around your airport for folks who would be willing to play golf or show up for the lunch art the end. Ask the folks at your FBO, your flight school, your airport authority or board or your town selectmen (we have established a special rate of $25 for government officials so they won't be in violation of NH's gift law).

The date for this event is September 22, 2017 and it will be at Pease Golf Course. Registration is at 8:00 am and the golf starts at 9:00 with lunch at 1:00 pm. People can register for golf, or sponsor the event at the following website:

Thank you and I look forward to seeing all of you at the June GSAMA meeting in Jaffrey!

Hi David,

Would you be willing to send an email blast about an upcoming Young Eagles rally at Nashua?

Air Direct Airways is hosting a Young Eagles Rally at ASH on June 3.  If any NHPA pilots want to fly some kids that would be great!  Volunteer pilots need to be EAA members and need to have completed the EAA Youth Protection Program requirements.  I’ve attached the pilots’ briefing supplied by our Young Eagles Coordinator and ADA Chief Pilot, Dave Plantier.  IAC Chapter 35, aka New England Aerobatics Club, is the EAA chapter sponsor for the event.

I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that Young Eagles is a wonderful outreach program that promotes GA, promotes our local airports, and can demonstrate to the public that we’re real people who are happy to share our passion for flying to anyone who may be interested.

Thanks and regards,

Manchester, NH

Fly-in your homebuilt aircraft to the Aviation Museum of NH, Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, or visit the museum to see a wide variety of homebuilt aircraft on display! All are welcome to attend this unique family friendly event. Homebuilt/Experimental pilots flying in receive free admission. All planes welcome.

Experimental Amateur-Built Aircraft, often called "homebuilt" aircraft, have existed as long as powered flight. Instead of relying on a factory for construction, homebuilts rely on superior craftsmanship and handwork, and are typically built in garages or basements. According to the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), homebuilts are the fastest growing segment of new aircraft in the United States, with tens of thousands flying throughout the world. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifies these aircraft as "experimental amater-built" (E-AB).

A variety of homebuilt aircraft will be on display. A People's Choice Award and Kid's Choice Award will be presented during the event. There will be activities throughout the day, including an aircraft covering demonstration, a riveting demonstration, and more. Activities for children include face painting, paper airplane building, and a build your own wing rib project. Coffee and pasteries will be available in the morning, and hot dogs, hamburgers, and ice cream will be available in the afternoon.

Join us for this exciting, one-of-a-kind event, or fly-in to the Aviation Museum of NH, Manchester-Boston Regional Airport

Please contact the museum for more information. Pilots please contact avmuseum@nhahs.org to pre-register.

Flying Again Fundraiser - Massachusetts Air & Space Museum
November 28, 2015

Charles River Museum of Industry & InnovationWaltham, MA

http://flyingagain.brownpapertickets.org

The Massachusetts Air and Space Museum, in conjunction with the Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation, is hosting the world premiere of "Flying Again." This professionally created movie follows the struggles and triumphs of several former pilots who, for various reasons, have allowed their ability to fly to lapse.

MzeroA Films presents a J. Edward Ellis film by Jason Schappert "Flying Again," starring Jason Schappert, Abingdon, Welch, Larry Diamond, Joel Weaner, and Jason Blair.

If you love flying, airplanes, or just seeing dreams come true again, this movie is a must see.

This is a fundraiser to support the future Massachusetts Air and Space Museum, proposed to be built at Hanscom Field in Bedford in 2019, and the Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation in Waltham.

You will be able to meet Jason Schappert and hear why he feels that this subject is so important to the future of aviation. Jason is a 9,000 CFI, author of 10 best-selling aviation books, and president of MzeroA.com where he reaches over 100,000 pilots every month. AOPA named Jason their 'Most Outstanding Flight Instructor" in 2014.

You will be able to tour the Charles River Museum and perhaps have the winning bid in the silent auction. We are working to create a few surprises as well!

Flying Treasure Hunt
October 17, 2015

Southern Maine Aviation
KSFM
Sanford, Maine

Want a great reason to fly this Fall? Help support the New England region 99s in their mission to promote general aviation and help provide scholarship opportunities to all pilots. A “Flying Treasure Hunt in the Sky” is now set for a fall flying adventure. The Katahdin Wings Chapter of 99s is offering this extraordinary opportunity as a fundraising event for the benefit of all pilots and aviation in the New England region.

What is a “Flying Treasure Hunt”? It's “the most fun they've ever had flying,” according to last year's Treasure Hunt participants Russ and Judy Kelsea. After you've registered, on the day before the treasure hunts starts, you will receive a packet of clues leading you to “treasures” within a defined geographical area that will take you over the scenic landscape of southern New England. You’ll answer the clue and photograph the “treasure” (your answer) from your aircraft. The three-week window of time to complete the route will be Sept. 19 to Oct. 11, 2015, with answers turned in no later than October 12, 2015, so you can fly at your convenience and when the weather is suitable. The registration fee and clue packet is $35. Please contact contact Brenda Thibodeau at brenda@greenthumbfarms.com or 207-576-8355 to receive your packet. Please go to http://www.orgsites.com/me/katahdinwings/index.html for more information.

An awards barbecue at Sanford Seacoast Reg. Airport will follow on Oct. 17, where all the treasure hunters will find out what prizes they’ve won. Southern Maine Aviation will be sponsoring the barbecue and all pilots and non-pilots alike are invited even if you don't participate in the Treasure Hunt. Be sure to take this opportunity to challenge your brain as well as your navigational skills, enjoy New England’s stunning fall scenery, and support The 99s.

The Car Show portion of our event features old autos, brand new exotic vehicles, hot rods, muscle cars, ex-military vehicles, and new cars of almost every make. Airplane and car owners are urged to display their vehicles for judging, and we award trophies in many categories.

There is no entry fee, but your donation is appreciated. Nearby parking is available at $10, with proceeds helping to benefit the Boy Scouts. Handicapped parking and restrooms are available.

We are the Simsbury Flying Club, and proceeds from this event help keep our airport in operation. As a non-profit, all-volunteer group, we receive no funding from any governmental agency. Hello All,

Subject: Second Saturday @ Museum – May 9th, 2015
Air Force to Flying Tigers to FedEx
An Aviation Career
Paul Cassel
FedEx Express Senior VP, Flight Operations, Director of Operations

The Aviation Museum of NH announces that Paul Cassel, FedEx Express Senior VP of Flight Operations, Director of Operations, will be speaking at the museum Saturday May 9, 2015 at 11:00AM describing an aviation career that is the equivalent of going from playing sand lot baseball to the World Series! He will describe a career that began with Piper Cubs and has proceeded to a wide range of aircraft in the air cargo industry from DC8's to MD11’s to B-777's, while amassing over 26,000 hours of flight time.

As Paul says, “In my lifetime, I’ve seen aviation evolve from slow mechanical devices comprised of clutches, shafts, levers and electrical motors, to electronic technology that dazzles with speed and accuracy.”

Paul Cassel can’t remember a time when he wasn’t completely infatuated with airplanes and flying. He was just a teenager when he began working at the local airport fueling airplanes and cleaning hangars. He soloed on his 16th birthday and earned a private pilot’s license at age 17.

Today Paul is Senior Vice President of Flight Operations for FedEx Express, the world’s largest express transportation company providing fast, reliable delivery to every U.S. address and to more than 220 countries and territories. As FedEx’s chief pilot he is responsible for the management of nearly 5,000 pilots and 600 staff, and for the oversight of 370 transport aircraft flying in and out of 375 airports around the world.

This program is part of the museum’s “Second Saturday@Museum” series. Please contact us for more information at 603-669-4820, or avmuseum@nhahs.org. The Aviation Museum of NH is located at 27 Navigator Road, Londonderry, NH 03053.

ALTON BAY WINTER FESTIVAL
February 15 thru  16, 2014

B18
Alton Bay, NH

NOTICE
09 FEB 2014

Alton Bay, NH Seaplane base and Ice runway “B18”

As many of you know the Alton Bay Ice runway has been in operation for many years. It has had various sponsors. For many years the Aviation Association of NH promoted it as an annual association fly in. Alas the modern times have caught up with us and the association was forced to stop promoting it as a sponsored fly in due to insurance and liability concerns.
Here is the good news. A local group of Alton Bay business owners lead by Paul La Rochelle have stepped forward to open and maintain the runway. The NHDOT lead by Trish Lambert is also supporting this unique airport by supplying the necessary equipment to maintain the runway, taxi way and parking area. Your association plans to support the airport from our general fund.
The local businesses and residents of Alton Bay are very supportive of the airport. Paul reports that on a good weekend 30 - 40 planes fly in for breakfast and/ or lunch and the locals gather to watch the planes.

Here is how it works:

When the ice in the bay reaches @ 12 inches in thickness and the runway is plowed and ready for use Mike Pouliot of the NHDOT visits the sight and if everything is in order the runway is opened.
This usually happens around the 10th of January. From that point on NOTAMS are posted at (www.notams.faa.gov) by Paul to keep everyone abreast of the ice conditions, runway length and width, and if the runway is open. Large snow storms and warm weather can impact the operation. There is also a local phone number, 603-875-3498, with a recording that provides up to date information. If you are planning to fly to Alton Bay simply call before you launch!
The runway is typically maintained to 3000 ft and 90 – 100 ft wide. Taxi ways are also maintained and there is parking for a number of planes. Frequency is 122.8
While there is not a specific date for an official fly in Paul says that a great time to fly into “B18” is during the Alton Bay Winter Carnival. This year’s (unsponsored) event is scheduled for February 16th. It actually looks like we may get a break this year with the long range forecast for next Sunday looking good!! Hope to see you there!!

Here are some local restaurants that are in walking distance:

JP China Restaurant
Shibley’s Restaurant - lunch and dinner (opening weekends starting Jan 27th)
Bay Diner - breakfast and lunch
Amy Lyn’s Corner Convenient Store – serves coffee, breakfast sandwiches and lunch specials.
Donation cans to help support the airport are placed at various locations– please help out!

Thx,
David DeVries, President, NH Pilots Assoc.

Crunch Time! (Fly/Drive)
September 28, 2013

Plum Island Airport
2B2
Newbury, MA

Title: Crunch Time! .Topic: Preventing Approach, Landing, and Takeoff Accidents .Date and Time: Saturday, September 28, 2013 , starting at 10:00 am EDT Download Calendar File .Speaker(s): Ken MacDonald .Brief Description:
More accidents occur in the takeoff and landing phases of flight than any other. It is the close proximity to the ground that leaves less margin for error. Some pilots never really master the basics, then it's only a matter of time before they have a problem. Is the runway long enough? Are there obstructions? What is the density altitude? Is there a cross-wind? How good is your airspeed control? Do you know how to successfully recover from a bounced landing or when to go around? There are many lessons to be learned as pilots continue to experience takeoff and landing accidents nearly everyday! Coffee and donuts will be served. Weather Challenge"
September 19, 2013

Southern NH UniversityHooksett, NH

Topic: Weather Challenge
On Thursday, September 19, 2013 at 7:00 PM
Location:
Southern NH University
2500 N. River Road
Robert Frost Hall, Dining Center, Banquet Hall #2
Hooksett, NH 03106
Select Number:
NR0350994
Description:

You don’t need a meteorologist-level understanding of weather to be a good pilot—though to judge from some of the educational materials out there, you might think so. Skew-T diagrams and moist adiabatic lapse rates are all well and good, but for most of us it’s the practical stuff that matters.

With that in mind, our new seminar is aimed at bolstering your real-world weather wisdom—and having a little fun, too. As with our recent “Chart Challenge” seminar, we’ll put your knowledge to the test, quizzing you on everything from METAR/TAF decoding to real-world weather scenarios. Along the way we’ll cover:

-The most important weather resources for pilots
-Critical tie-ins with risk management and decision making
-Weather-related accidents that didn’t need to happen
-The promise (and pitfalls) of cockpit weather

Since the invention of the airplane, pilots have been plagued by loss of control and spin accidents. What causes a pilot to lose control? What causes an airplane to spin? How can a pilot recognize and avoid situations that could lead to an accident of this type? Loss of control accidents are not just limited to airborne aircraft; many pilots lose control of the airplane on the ground during the takeoff or landing roll! Join FAASTeam Program Manager John Wood for a discussion that could save your life.

The Aviation Museum of New Hampshire will be holding its next monthly program as part of Second Saturday@Museum speaker series on Saturday May 12th from 11 AM - Noon.

The speaker will be Mark P. Brewer, Airport Director of the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. The airport is a $1.24 billion economic engine and job creator for the region. It has the complexity and challenges of a small city within the City. Mark is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the airport while growing its viability for providing the region with better access into the air transportation system.

Mark will speak about the economic impact of the airport; the current state of the aviation industry; and will provide a look into the future. This will be an exciting program from an insider with over 30 years of progressive aviation and airport management experience.

Prior to joining the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport in January 2008, Mark held senior management positions at five East Coast airports including; Hyannis, MA, Fort Lauderdale, FL, Salisbury, MD, Allentown, PA, and Providence, RI, where he served as President and CEO of the Rhode Island Airport Corporation. He is on the Executive Committee of the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) and sits on the board for the International Association of Airport Executives. He has served as President of the Northeast Chapter of AAAE and as a member of AAAE’s Safety/Security Committee and Diversity Committee, as well as on its Board of Directors. Brewer has a Bachelor’s Degree in Air Commerce from the Florida Institute of Technology and is an accredited Airport Executive.

The program is open to the public as part of the admission fee (members are free) and will be held in the Vincent Devino Classroom from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. The International Seaplane Fly-In Associaton is a non-profit organization whose main focus is to provide aviation education (and a whole lot of fun!) to participants and spectators alike. We provide a scholarship each year to a deserving high school student who plans to further his/her education in some field related to aviation. The 2009 recipient of the scholarship is Megan Weymouth of Abbot who graduated from Piscataquis Community High School in June and is now attending Daniel Webster College in New Hampshire.

(Special thanks to Henry & Ellen Hinman for their generous donations to this endeavor.)

The International Seaplane Fly-In brings thousands of participants and spectators to the Moosehead Region on the week-end after Labor Day. The costs associated with putting on the Fly -In have increased each year. Please consider helping us to continue to fund this great tradition by placing your ad in our "Annual Guide".

Yankee Ultralight Fly-In
July 9, 2011

Sanderson's Field Greenland, NH

This program is meant to familiarize you with the aspects of certification and operation for Experimental Amateur Built Aircraft, Experimental Light Sport Aircraft (ESLA) and Special Light Sport Aircraft (SLSA). We will also examine the issues of inadequate transition training and instruction prior to operating, as well as maintenance and construction considerations. .
The fly-in is located at Sanderson's Field, Greenland, NH. The runway is turf and not level, with a large, steep hill at one end. Pilots electing to fly into the airport are strongly encouraged to conduct thorough pre-flight planning.

Driving Directions: From I-95 just south of Portsmouth, NH, take Route 33 South. Take a left on Route 151. The airfield is located several miles down on the right.

Sponsored by EAA 225 and Yankee Ultralights.

The amateur aircraft building community is foundational to general aviation in the US. However, recent trends in experimental airplane accidents have suggested a need for an increased effort to ensure that pilots of experimental airplanes are prepared for the challenges associated with the building and operation of these airplanes. Historically, experimental airplane flight operations represent a small percentage of flight hours, but a significant percentage of General Aviation (GA) accidents. For example, 2009 accident data showed that while experimental airplanes are involved in approximately 27% of fatal accidents in the United States, they fly only 3.4% of the total general aviation fleet hours.

While a higher risk in experimental aircraft flight operations might be acceptable to the general aviation community and the general public, in order for the recreational, educational and experimental benefits of amateur built airplanes to flourish, both FAA and industry agree that safety improvements are needed. .
